Marriage Counselling: How to Prepare for Your First Session

If both you and your partner want to invest in and reinforce or mend your marriage, consider getting marriage counselling to help you realize that goal. There are some important things you could do to prepare yourself for your first session to be fruitful and meaningful.

1. You should keep in mind that your therapist isn’t the person responsible for fixing your relationship. He guider you in making necessary changes on your own, which happen mostly outside of the office.

2. The sooner you enter marriage counselling when adversities emerge, the better. Oftentimes, couples wait until they’re on the point of putting an end on their marriage before seeking help. Marriage counselling therapy could still be helpful in this situation, however it’s best not to wait for this to occur. Taking charge of the problems and not allowing them to destroy what you both have can be empowering.

3. You and your spouse should consider and recognize the roles you both have in the marital issues. It’s easy to point a finger on the other person and very hard to take responsibility. Now is the time to prepare for own your part. But if you’re not ready for this that’s okay. However, bear in mind that this will emerge soon in your counselling process.

4. You and your spouse should think about what your relationship means to you and whether both of you are willing to make changes. When the two of you make positive changes that are meaningful to the other, they serve as reinforcement and could be a stimulant for more positive changes. You may not be ready to make changes right now, but this will be examined in the process.

5. Know that you cannot change the other person. Too often, couples attend marriage counselling therapy blaming the other person. Instead, focus on the changes that you’re willing to make.

6. Do not consider your marital problem as “unfixable.” Remember that it’s not the severity of the marital issue that determines how long the relationship can last. What’s important is how both the husband and the wife communicate about the problem. Your marriage counselor will teach you good and effective communication skills that could help you rebuild trust and reconnect with each other.

To have success in your marriage counselling process, ponder on the above written points before attending your first therapy. Check out VICTORIAN COUNSELLING & PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES by following the link to learn more information about how counselling will work for both you and your spouse.
